FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1.
The area I want to sod has a lot of weeds in it. What should I do before I sod?
Spray the weeds with a herbicide such as Roundup. The herbicide should be applied when no rain is forecast for the next day. Allow about 10 to 14 days before cutting off the weeds and working the area.
2.
How early and how late in the season may you lay sod?
Generally, sod may be laid at any time between mid-April until mid-December, weather permitting. If it can be cut, it can be laid.
3.
The grass under my trees is very thin. What can I do to improve it?
Trees have a very large root system, close to the surface of the ground. Due to heavy shade there is very little that can be done. Extra fertilizer, water, use of fescue seed and thinning of the tree for additional sunlight may help. Grass does not naturally grow in shaded areas.
4.
I have skunks digging in my lawn, what are they after and what can be done to get rid of them?
They are probably after grubs under the sod. Dig up the sod in a small area to check for grubs. You can apply a chemical purchased from a garden centre for the control of grubs.
5. Do I have to put top soil down under the soil or can it be laid on the fill?
You will have a better lawn if you could add a minimum of 2 inches of topsoil on the fill.
6.
My ground is mostly sand. Can I grow grass on it?
Yes, you can grow sod on it. However, the sand does not retain moisture or nutrients and will require more care to maintain a nice lawn.
7.
How often should I water a newly laid lawn? How much water should it receive?
It is very important to water as soon as possible. Start watering an area while you are laying another area. Allow about 1 “ of water per day for the first week then taper off gradually. The sod should be firmly rooted in about 3 weeks. Any blueish tinge is the first sign of wilt, then browning if not watered immediately. See more helpful information under maintenance tips.
8.
I have a lot of mushrooms on my new lawn. What caused them and how can I get rid of them?
Mushrooms grow from airborne spores. They need moist fertile ground to grow on. They will do no harm , just knock them off. They will not grow in dry weather.
